Believing What God Says: Why the Bible Means Exactly What It Says
Many people say they believe the Bible. They call it Gods word. Yet when they read a clear command or warning in its pages, some reply, “Well, that is what it says, but I do not think that is what it means.” This attitude troubles the heart of any sincere follower of Christ. If the Bible comes from God, we must take it seriously. We must believe what it says in its actual pages. God does not play games with our souls. He speaks plainly because He loves us and wants us to understand and obey.
Think about who God is. He spoke the universe into existence. He formed the stars, the earth, and every living thing. Since He created us, He surely knows how to give us a message we can understand. The Bible tells us, “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him” (Proverbs 30:5 NKJV). His words are not hidden or confusing. They are given so we can know His will and follow it.
Look at the examples God placed in Scripture. They show what happens when people twist or ignore what He says. In the Garden of Eden, God gave Adam and Eve a simple command. The serpent came along and questioned it. He asked, “Has God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” (Genesis 3:1 NKJV). Eve listened to the doubt he planted. She added to Gods words and then ate the fruit. Sin entered the world because someone changed what God had plainly said.
The story of Cain and Abel teaches the same lesson. Both brothers brought offerings to the Lord. God had regard for Abel’s offering but not for Cains. Why? Cain did not follow the way God wanted. The Bible shows us that worship must be done according to Gods directions, not our own ideas. Cain grew angry and killed his brother. His choice to go his own way brought terrible consequences (Genesis 4:3-8 NKJV).
Another clear warning comes from Nadab and Abihu, sons of Aaron the priest. They offered fire before the Lord that He had not commanded. The Bible records what happened next: “Then fire came out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord” (Leviticus 10:2 NKJV). God had given specific instructions for worship. They ignored those instructions and paid with their lives. These accounts remind us that God means what He says. He expects obedience.
Why does this matter so much today? Because every one of us will stand before God in judgment. Jesus Himself warned, “He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him; the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day” (John 12:48 NKJV). The very words of Christ recorded in the Bible will be the standard on that day. No one will escape. The books will be opened, and we will give account for how we lived by what God said.
The good news is that God has not left us without hope. He offers salvation to those who take His word seriously. The writer of Hebrews tells us about Jesus, “And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him” (Hebrews 5:9 NKJV). Obedience is not optional. It flows from a heart that loves God and trusts what He says. Jesus put it simply: “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15 NKJV).
This message is for everyone. No one is too young or too old, too rich or too poor. Life here is short. We live on borrowed time. The apostle Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16 NKJV). The gospel calls us to hear Gods word, believe it, repent of our sins, confess Jesus as Lord, and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Then we must continue to walk in the light of Scripture each day.
Studying the Bible takes effort, but it is worth it. The Lord tells us, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV). Open its pages with prayer. Read carefully. Ask what God commands, what He promises, and what He warns against. Compare scripture with scripture so you understand it rightly. Then put it into practice.
It’s simple. We can listen to the doubts of the world that try to twist Gods words. Or we can take God at His word and obey what He has written. The first path leads to sorrow and eternal loss. The second path leads to life with Him forever. Let us choose today to believe the Bible exactly as God gave it. Let us study it, love it, and obey it with all our hearts.
