Who is God?

One of the most important questions any of us will ever ask is this: Who is God? I have spent a lot of time studying what the Bible says about Him. The more I open God’s word, the more I see His greatness and His love for us. The Bible does not answer every question we might have, but it tells us what we need to know to live for Him and go to heaven.

The Bible teaches that God has no beginning. He is eternal. There was never a time when God did not exist. Deuteronomy 29:29 says, “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” Some things God has chosen not to explain to us, and I am okay with that. I cannot fully understand how God can be eternal, but I also cannot understand how He spoke the entire universe into existence. The Bible simply tells me that He always has been, and that is enough.

The Scriptures show us three wonderful truths about God’s nature. First, God knows everything. Psalm 147:5 tells us, “Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.” First John 3:20 adds, “God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.” Nothing is hidden from Him.

Second, God is all-powerful. Jeremiah 32:17 declares, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.” Just look at Genesis 1:16. After telling how God made the sun and the moon, it simply says, “He made the stars also.” With only a few words the Bible shows the greatness of His power.

Third, God is present everywhere. Psalm 139:7-9 asks, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.” Proverbs 15:3 says, “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” God fills heaven and earth.

These three truths describe the divine nature. The Bible also teaches that there are three distinct persons who share this one Godhead: God the Father, the Son (who came to earth and took the name Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 commands us to baptize “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” In Acts 5:3-4 we learn that lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God Himself.

These are not three different names for one person. They are three separate beings who work together perfectly. Jesus prayed to the Father. In John 14:23 He said, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” At His baptism, the Father spoke from heaven, the Son stood in the water, and the Holy Spirit descended like a dove. Clearly there are three persons.

What is God’s character like? The Bible says plainly in First John 4:8, “God is love.” John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Romans 5:8 adds, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Because He loves us, God is also full of mercy. Ephesians 2:4-5 says, “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).”

At the same time, God is perfectly just. Romans 11:22 speaks of both “the goodness and severity of God.” Romans 3:26 tells us that God is “just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” He did not overlook our sin. Instead, He sent His Son to pay the price so that He could forgive us while remaining perfectly just.

God is also jealous in a righteous way. He wants the very best for us and will not allow our hearts to be divided with false gods. And He is patient with us. Second Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”

This is the God revealed in the Bible. He is eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful, and present everywhere. He exists as three persons in one divine nature. He loves us deeply, shows rich mercy, demands justice, and patiently calls us to come to Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.

I hope you will open your own Bible and read these passages for yourself. The God who made the stars also cares about you personally. He sent Jesus to die for your sins so you can be forgiven and live with Him forever in heaven.
